Getting To Know Each Other!

The first two weeks this year have been jam-packed full of exciting activities and special days. We have done so much learning already and have really been getting to know each other well. Below are just a few of the learning experiences we have had already this term.

Our attitude to learning

We have done a lot of thinking about growth mindset and how important it is to stay positive and keep practising ESPECIALLY when we find things tricky because it is the challenging work that helps our brain to grow - our magic word this year is "YET".

"I can't do joined up handwriting yet, but if I practise I will get better" - Dougy
"They had a head start but we worked together as a team and didn't give up and then we won!" - Brekken

 English

With Roald Dahl Day coming up, we started our first week of term by reading 'The Twits'. In our classroom, we now have a HUGE Mr. Twit with a beard full of all of the disgusting things he must have caught in his beard over the many years of him never having a shower!

We are all super excited about the new books we have in school available for children to take home and we are going to start creating a 'reading tower' out of Lego to compete with Year 3 Eagles to see which class can read the most at home! (One piece of Lego per read at home).

So far, we have done two pieces of unaided descriptive writing using talk, drama and pictures to give us ideas for our writing. This term, nearly all of our writing will focus around "The Green Ship" by Quentin Blake and, this coming week, we have some interactive activities planned to really get us thinking about the creation and description of characters in story writing.

Maths

Our focus this term will be on Number and Place Value. We are going to try and make homework as interactive with the real world as possible in order to make it relevant to real life. The last few weeks have mainly been showing and finding out what we all remember from Year 2, so from this coming week should provide some really exciting opportunities to learn some new Maths!

Theme

Term 1's theme is History! Year 3 will be focusing on 'The Victorians in Bristol'. To kick-start our history term we had a full day of CASTLES. We learnt all about all the different features of castles, why round towers are better than square, and all kinds of other interesting facts! Not only did we research and learn about the features, but we then designed and built our own ones using all of our new knowledge.

Our trip to Blaise Castle and Museum was amazing and we learnt so many cool things about the Stone Age and the Iron Age! This will help us so much when learning about the Victorians over this term as we can compare what life would have been like without the incredible inventions the Victorians came up with - many of which we still use today! We have some fantastic photos from our trip and we even had a professional photographer! These will be uploaded, as soon as we are given access to them, via DropBox.

Two 'Stars of the Week' will be chosen next week as we missed the celebration assembly this week due to our trip.

And finally, a MASSIVE good luck and goodbye to Brekken and Erin who I hope had a lovely last day with us in Peacocks. We wish you all the best on your new adventures!
